BLOG: What Have You Got To Prove?!

What have you got to prove?!  Ever asked yourself that? I’m sure at one point or another you’ve asked yourself “what have I got to lose?” Right? And, that’s an important question in order to understand and assess and quantify and define the risks involved, what your fears are, and what you can in fact lose if you make this decision or that.

But what about asking yourself, “what have I got to prove?” Have you ever done that?

See, I used to think that realizing your dreams, and achieving your goals, and attaining “success” in whatever you may be pursuing had a whole lot to do with proving something. Not necessarily proving something to someone else or others (although if I’m completely honest, then yes – that was part of it too for sure), but mostly I think, it was about proving something to myself.

That I am capable. That I am strong. That I am talented. That I am smart. That I am resilient. That I am beautiful – outside and in. That I can fully realize all of my potential. And, that I can achieve “greatness” in my life.

But not so long ago, I realized that the idea of proving something to myself had somewhere along the way and somehow become my number one main driver. It had become my big Why – the reason I wanted to, and needed to, and would stop at nothing to realize my dreams and achieve my version of success. The ego-assuring allure of proving all those somethings to myself had sucked me in and completely taken over.

Then, I quickly realized the danger in that. Please don’t misunderstand me – having and using that mind state of proving something to yourself or to someone else can be a fantastic and incredibly useful motivator. It can help give you that initial push you need to get up off your ass and at least decide to start doing something. Because if you’re anything like me, when someone tells you that you can’t do something, or you’re not good enough, or smart enough, or strong enough, or any adjective enough (even if that someone is one of your own voices in your head), then your gut reaction and first response is  – oh yeah, watch me. Because oh yes I can!

But, when that motivator takes over everything else and becomes your main source of guiding inspiration or your biggest Why, then that’s when it becomes dangerous and even self defeating. Because now every decision you make and every step you take on your journey to success and to realizing your dreams and to achieving your goals is driven by proving something to someone, even if it’s to yourself.

But realizing your dreams and becoming your best self and truly seizing your passion has absolutely nothing to do with proving anything to anyone, including yourself.

Rather, the great Why behind realizing your dreams and fulfilling your maximum potential and doing the things that light you up and bring out the best in you is because they are what you were meant to do and the very reason you are alive. It’s that simple. Not because you want or need to prove something to anyone else or to yourself. Not because of your ego. And certainly not because you’re scared of losing something.

The great Why behind seizing your passion is simply because you were meant to live on purpose! You were meant to unleash the magic in you, not the madness. And we seem to only remember to live on purpose in that way when something is at stake – urgently and imminently. Or, when we’re confronted with our mortality or the mortality of a loved one.

All of sudden in those moments your dreams, your goals, your magic, your potential, your Passion for living your life on purpose pours out of you. When the stakes are high. But your life is at stake! Everyday, every moment, every action and choice you make or don’t make. And we forget that. Until we’re confronted with it face to face.

And, it’s not just about how to realize your dreams, achieve your goals, and be successful. It’s about how you choose to live your life! Every day! When you are true to who you are, to your dreams, your passions, your calling, your purpose, your values, your ideals, and your beliefs (without letting fear or proving something get in the way), when you work hard and play hard too, when you live with integrity and honor and humility and empathy and compassion, and of course with PASSION – then those dreams and goals and that success and all of your greatness will realize itself.

It is life growth – not just personal growth or professional growth. They are one and the same. They are not separate. Because how you do anything is how you do everything. And everything is connected, everything has ripple effects, and consequences, and reactions.

So, go out there and live your life on purpose!

What have you got to lose? Absolutely nothing.
What have you got to prove? Also absolutely nothing.
